What is Pilates?
Pilates is a type of low-impact, mind-body exercise developed in the 1920's by German physical trainer Joseph Pilates. He called his method "Contrology" although most simply refer to it as PILATES. While it was initially intended for athletes and dancers - over the past 100+ years, it has evolved to be more inclusive so that it can be something that everyone can benefit from.
The most popular piece of equipment has to be the Pilates Reformer - it is a traditional piece of Pilates equipment which looks like a bed with springs, a sliding carriage, ropes and pulleys. The origins of the Pilates reformer date back to the original Pilates studio in New York in the 1920’s and was designed by Joseph Pilates himself.

The reformer makes a dramatic impression when you first see one, and an even more dramatic change in your body when you use it. At first glance, it looks almost medieval. Put any fears you may have aside because after just one or two workouts on a reformer, you’ll see that it is the most versatile and effective piece of exercise equipment ever made… plus it’s great fun!
Is Pilates the same as Yoga?
No. And yes. Some aspects of Pilates are similar to yoga, but there are a few notable differences. Although both workouts focus on mindfulness, Yoga places more of an emphasis on meditation and relaxation, while Pilates prioritizes actual exercises that get the core working. Movement is also a key difference. In yoga, you hold specific poses for an extended period; the poses typically repeat. Pilates features shorter sets with fewer repetitions.

Do you have to be fit to do Pilates?
Short answer: NO! One of the things that made me fall in love with Pilates was how inclusive it can be. There's a progression and regression for almost every exercise. And if all else fails, just wait it out until the next exercise - because the flow is a moving target that is often changing.
What should I expect for my first session?
Come in wearing something comfortable that you can move in, and some grippy socks. We will then have a little chat about what your goals are, and go from there. I will create a flow and/or workout for you. I can even give you "homework" to do when you're out and about!
For the most part, student's goals involve wanting to be more nimble and graceful. Or maybe you want to sculpt yourself better than the status of David? For example - for me, it's about being able to keep up with my kids, and trying to set a good example for them by prioritizing my health inside and out.
Will I be sore or in pain after doing Pilates?
When you first begin, you will most likely use muscles you are not used to using, and some you may have never used before. You may experience the majority of your soreness in your core, since Pilates primarily works your core muscles. To me, soreness isn’t a bad thing. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. Soreness when beginning a new exercise regimen is common, and means that your muscles are likely getting stronger.

My #1 rule, however, is that if a move doesn't feel good - don't do it. Maybe that means modifying the exercise so that it is more accessible to you, or skipping that move all together. You should not feel pain, only the soreness of your muscles waking up from their deep slumber.

How are you different from other Pilates Teachers?
I have had several Pilates Teachers who I can honestly refer to as mentors for life. The whole Pilates community has been very welcoming... for the most part. There are, however, some avenues of Pilates that can come across as not so inclusive too *all* bodies of *all* levels. Or the dreaded "Pilates police" -aka- people who like to tell you that what you're doing is not "real" Pilates.

Being relatively new to the Pilates space, I can offer my point of view from a beginner's / outsider's perspective. I know how intimidating exercise can be for some, and I strive to make it a positive and (somewhat) comfortable experience. To me, Pilates is a personal practice that will likely be different for everyone. Let's face it, we are not all the graceful and limber ballerinas that Joseph Pilates initially intended these movements for. And that's ok!

Although I am relatively new to the Pilates space, I have been deeply immersed in all things Pilates since September 2021. I have worked with teachers and students from all backgrounds, fitness levels, ages, and body types. To me, the more variety, the better. When it comes to the types of movements, the equipment, and accessories used - I love to change it up. The ability to customize Pilates for anyone is what made me fall in love with it in the first place.
